Why we will no longer use DrugChecks SalivaScan

Due to the supply issues with the ToxWipe 6 a while ago we moved to another brand offered by one of our suppliers, the SalivaScan 6 (also tests COC, AMP, BZO, MET, THC and OPI). I did my usual trials with the first units and loaded them with drugs to see what would happen. When loaded with Methadone, it went false positive for Benzodiazepines and was negative for all other opioids.

Whilst testing donors it was constantly giving false positive for Benzodiazepines and on 2 occasions a false positive for amphetamines (this was confirmed false positive by a NATA accredited laboratory).

At a guess, I would give it a 33% false positive rate for Benzodiazepines.

For this reason, I will no longer be purchasing DrugCheck products for the foreseeable future.

The batch numbers we experienced false positives on were PI-07019 and PJ-08056. Care Health America (the parent company of DrugCheck) were contacted about this issue twice, 12 January 2021 and 27 April 2021. So far no official response has been issued by DrugCheck and the only real contact (other than an automated/template response) has been when they asked their Australian Distributor in Sydney to 'deal with us', as a professional courtesy we won't be naming the distributor however it is poor form for a company to palm the responsibility of the product they manufacture to a distributor who has no say in the design or quality control process.

I will immediately be looking at using a ToxWipe 7, DrugWipe 6 or other similar device.

I apologise sincerely for any false negatives and the impact this has had on clients or donors/employees who have had to endure being stood down until laboratory results came in.

The entirety of this entry is purely my opinion of the device and I am sure they have some sponsored laboratory test that shows the rate of a false positive is lower than what I experienced.
